Changes to the Death Certification Process in the UK

What You Need to Know

1. What Has Changed?

A statutory Medical Examiner system has been introduced across England and Wales to independently scrutinise all non-coronial deaths. This system provides families with an opportunity to discuss the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD), ensuring accuracy and transparency in the process.

2. Why Are These Changes Important?

These updates enhance transparency and provide support for families. Medical Examiners review MCCDs to ensure accuracy and address any concerns raised by the bereaved.

3. The Updated Process
  • Verification of Death: A healthcare professional will confirm the death.
  • Completion of MCCD: The attending practitioner completes the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
  • Medical Examiner Review: The MCCD is reviewed by the Medical Examiner, who discusses the cause of death with the family.
  • Registration of Death: The finalised MCCD allows families to register the death.
4. Coroner Referrals

Certain deaths will still be referred to a coroner, including those that are sudden, unexplained, or due to suspicious circumstances.

5. Support for Families

Medical Examiners offer compassionate communication, explaining the cause of death and addressing concerns. This ensures families receive clarity and support throughout the process.
